Thank You Mr. Jefferson
Whether you agree with his politics or not, Thomas Jefferson, was THE catalyst for wine becoming relevant in our country. He was not only the first wine importer, purchasing several hundred cases of Bordeaux directly from vineyards such as Chateau Lafitte but he was also the first to grow grapes. Jefferson, tirelessly attempted to grow on his property and properties adjacent. He brought vines from France and Italy but was never quite successful the way he imagined.
Today, Virginia wine country is flourishing and some of the same varietals he introduced to our soils are also setting new standards for domestic juice. I was fortunate to visit this past fall and see some of these original vines. His vision was extraordinary for our country and also for wine.
Yesterday was the great Oenophile’s birthday. I continue to lobby with local distributors to bring some Virginia wine in but sadly, there is not enough support, YET! We have a Virginia sparkling in Louisiana and some cider so far. I’ll continue to wave the Virginia wine flag but for now you’ll just have to trust me! Cheers!
